Soroptimist in Stark
I am the vice president of Soroptimist in Stark. I believe that I need to use my talent and passion to work to improve my community. A few activities we have done this year have been host a fundraiser fashion show, wrap Christmas gifts for the homeless shelter, and teach women how to sew.
Soroptimist International, Inc., is a worldwide organization of classified service clubs, which unites outstanding professional and executive business women in activities that make a difference in the lives of women and girls. In cooperation with other organizations, Soroptimists seek to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace. The name Soroptimist was derived from Latin and is translated as best of women, best for women.
This organization and capstone all takes action in improving Sustainable Development Goal #5: Gender Equality. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Unfortunately, at the current time, 1 in 5 women and girls between the ages of 15-49 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner within a 12-month period and 49 countries currently have no laws protecting women from domestic violence. As stated on the UN website, "Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large."
