Embroidered Empowerment

My Capstone Project

Through this arts based project for the Jackson Academy for Global Studies and the Jackson School for the Arts, I am designing, embroidering, and selling female empowering t-shirts, bags, and stickers.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these products will be donated to the Soroptimist Club in Stark, the local chapter of Soroptimist International, a global volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic improvement. These donations will help them fund participation in certain programs, some of which include, “Live Your Dream”, providing women and girls educational grants, “A Fresh Start”, supplying beds and bedding for women transitioning out of the domestic violence shelter, and working with the “STOP Trafficking Project”.

My capstone relates to my future career because I designed these shirts, and I am planning on studying fashion design at Kent next fall. I chose to include embroidery in my shirts because women empowerment is woven inside our culture and society, and I wanted to physically manifest this idea. I also plan on continuing to use my voice for the betterment of my community, in hopes that one day everyone, no matter gender, race, religion, or sexuality, will be treated with the same kindness and compassion. The biggest thing I hoped to accomplish with this capstone was to put my stance on women’s rights out there, while inspiring my peers and community to use their voices for good as well. I can most definitely say that my capstone was a success. I accomplished my goals and more. I even sold out of shirts and had to make more. The support I received from my community was truly incredible and it is something I will always cherish. Even if my shirts didn’t sell, I would have still considered my capstone successful because I had the chance to voice my opinion and let these incredible women know that they are not alone and that we are fighting for our rights.

The Woman’s Eye: so delicate, yet so strong and confident. This design evolved from an infatuation I have with the Woman’s eye. I find it astounding how Women see the future - and how we are the future. I hope this inspires people to ponder at how they view the world as well, and how to make a change.

When most people think of strength, they think of a man - but I think of a Woman. I was inspired by the fists and power of all of those who attended the Women’s March last year. It wasn’t the actual march that inspired me, it was the strong Women demanding change for what they wanted, which is where the quote, “Strong Women Empower Women,” comes from. This piece is meant to go out into the world to remind them that We are all in this together.
